Summer X Diabetes Tech

It's not a match made in heaven but it can be ✔ Find out our popular tips to look out for during the summer.

Diabetes Tech Not Staying On.

WE. HEAR. YOU. But don't worry, there's plenty of tips and tricks to help you find your perfect solution.

Help! My device is suddenly falling off! Have you tried using Skin Tac before inserting your sensor? Make sure no lotions or suncreams touch the adhesive, as these can deteriorate it. Leave as long as possible (overnight is best) before getting the sensor and/or patch wet. If these measures do not work, trying using an armband to secure the sensor in place.

Summer Activities You CAN Enjoy.

Is it water proof? What if my site falls off? How will I adjust my insulin if I need to?  Feeling a little like this when it comes to new activites?...

All of the CGM sensors can be immesed in water, they may just need a little bit of help to stay secured, or to be inserted well before you go swimming with it on. Many people need to adjust their basal in warmer weather, It can make you run higher or lower than usual, and extra activity such as swimming etc. will need to be accounted for. You can still do everything you did before diabetes. Tubed pumps can be removed for swimming and reattached during the day as and when needed. Patch pumps can be left in in the water. CGMs will not send readings to your phone/receiver while under water, so you may need to pop out of the pool every so often just to check all is well.

Holidays X Diabetes Doesn't Need To Be Scary.

We start with a checklist of all supplies we need (pack 3 times as much, we have had cancelled flights and needed them!). Pack all diabetes kit in hand luggage as it cannot go in the hold. Inform your airline you will have a medical bag as extra hand luggage (usually done through special assistance). Keep a copy of the prescription and letter from clinic listing the items you are bringing with you, and letters from pump/CGM manufacturers explaining if items cannot go through X ray machines. You can use the Sunflower lanyard scheme if you feel it will help at security, or the CAA medical device awareness card which is recognised by airport security. Just remember the security staff are there to keep everyone safe, so may have questions about your kit.

We took our first flight (with diabetes) within the first 3 months of diagnosis! There was no way we'd let it stop us from enjoying family time away. Yes, it was a lot of research and working outs but that's just what we do! But we're here to tell you, there's ways to make it the whole process simple and a little easier to digest!

Here's a brief overview of our process when travelling on our first flight.

Manage Your Diabetes In Hot Weather.

When it comes to hot weather, we've had many discussions with members of the community and our customers, on what issues they have come across. Personally, our son's sugar levels run high during the hotter weather, but most commonly people have experienced their sugars running low...

We start with an increased temp basal if we're having a lazy day, but if swimming etc we avoid this as BGs can come crashing down with activity - time for an ice cream! Either way, keep some hypo treatments (preferably ones that don't melt in the heat) on hand at all times.
